about

This is a strange one - even for me. Hopefully the end result is a collection of calming, meditative music, even though the way I produced it was pretty experimental.

For anyone interested in the gory details:

I used a combination of approaches on this album. I'm fascinated by Generative Music, and I used the Stochas generative sequencer to produce the skeleton of the music for each track. The 'generative' aspect was tightly constrained to a particular key or mode, and only very subtle variation was allowed. My intention was to allow a little unpredictability, without going off into complete randomness. Also, I allowed myself a little post-editing of the MIDI produced by Stochas, so I suppose the music is not in the strictest sense 'generative'.

Each track is based on a different microtonal scale - although again I've tried to keep it subtle. Hopefully the effect should be interesting without being totally disorienting.

Most of the instrumentation is u-He's Zebra (if it's good enough for Zimmer...), Repro and Hive, some of the more percussive noises come from AAS' Chromaphone, and for mastering I used u-He's Presswerk for compression and Nomad Factory's Magnetic II for tape emulation.
